Oil platform workers sentenced for triggering deadly 2012 explosion

One of 67 Criminal Prosecutions in Louisiana under the Clean Water Act (from 1989-2021)

Three individual defendants entered a guilty plea to misdemeanor under the Clean Water Act (CWA) in connection with the deadly oil platform explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that claimed the lives of three workers and severely burned and injured many more.

Incident investigators found the defendants acted negligently performing "hot work" welding on an uninspected site without a valid permit. The negligence of the defendants working in unsafe conditions was the source of ignition for the massive explosion that released 500 barrels of crude oil to burn up in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A numnber of corporate and individual defendants were convicted for their roles in the 2012 incident, the individual defendants in this case also pleading guilty to CWA negligent violation. Two of the three defendants were sentenced to federal fines of $2500 and each defendant received one year probation.

Federal fine: $5,000; Probation: 36 months
