Tangipahoa River flooding at Robert
Tchefuncte River and Bogue Falaya flooding near Covington

Water news for Friday, January 26, 2024 - last updated 1153 am CST

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 939 am CST Jan 26

DENSE FOG ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON CST TODAY...Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog in portions of south central and southwest Arkansas, north central and northwest Louisiana and east and northeast Texas causing hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility. Streamflow Situation from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations around the eight watersheds of the state
Bogue Chitto began flooding near Bush around 930 pm last night, running just over half a foot above minor flood stage on a slow rising trend beginning to level off as of this update. Peak flow appears imminent.

Bayou Dorcheat is still flooding near Springhill, running more than five feet above flood stage in Region 1. Bayou des Cannes continues flooding near Eunice in Region 5, running more than a foot over flood stage.

Tangipahoa River is still flooding at Robert, running more than three feet over minor flood stage in Region 7. Nearby in Region 7, the Tchefuncte River continues to flood at Folsom and near Covington. Bogue Falaya River is still flooding at Boston St in Covington, flooding has subsided at Camp Covington.

Little Corney Bayou is flowing above 99th percentile near Lillie in Region 3. Bayou San Patricio is still flowing above the 99th percentile near Benson in Region 4. Amite River is flowing extreme high near Darlington in Region 7 with plenty of room to expand before flood would occur. More to follow.

Check black tags for flood, blue tags for 99th percentile flows with levels updated through the day.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
All that remains on the drought map after days of rain and high streamflows is a below normal rating in what was recently classed severe drought area around Calcasieu River and watershed Region 5. A small area of Cental Morehouse Parish in Region 3 is rated below normal, the only below normal area left of Region 1, 2, and 3. A strip along Pearl River and Bogue Chitto is below normal today, the east side of Washington and St Tammany Parishes in watershed Region 7. As Bogue Chitto is currently flooding, this below normal streamflow 7 day average rating will shift as well.

Red-brown tags on the map refer to extreme low flows.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.
