HAPPENING NOW
Flood relief for Covington in watershed Region 7
14 USGS stations recording flooding

Water news for Monday, January 29, 2024 - last updated 910 pm CST

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations around the eight watersheds of Louisiana
12 stations record active flooding as of this Monday night update.

Tchefuncte River subsided below flood stage at LA-190 near Covington around 130 pm Monday, ending all flooding around Covington. Bogue Falaya River flooding ended at Boston St in Covington yesterday.

Calcasieu River subsided back into its channel at Oberlin just before 2 pm this afternoon, still spilling over upstream at Glenmora and downstream at Kinder. Calcasieu River flow volume is tapering off as of this evening update.

Bayou Bodcau in Region 1 is up nearly a foot since noon, currently running close to four and a half feet over flood stage near Shreveport and still steadily rising. Bayou Dorcheat is flooding Day 7 near Springhill, running three and a half feet over minor flood stage, slowly coming down as of the evening update. Downstream at Minden station, Bayou Dorcheat has been flooding over 24 hours, currently close to four feet into flood stage and still steadily rising.

Watershed Region 4 Sabine River is still flooding near Ruliff TX. Flooding began here at the stroke of midnight Friday night/Saturday morning. The flooding has been three-quarters of a foot over and holding there, now almost to Day 4. Calcasieu River continues to flow over its banks where it is measured by USGS flow monitors at Glenmora and Kinder. At Glenmora, the flow is four inches over flood stage on a slight increasing trend. Downstream at Oberlin, flooding ended after lunch, the water level here is almost half a foot below flood stage and receding. At Kinder, the water level has dropped a couple of inches through the day, still running more than half a foot over flood stage and still trending slightly downward.

Region 5 Bayou Nezpique began flooding around 4 am Sunday morning near Basile, still flowing more than a foot over as of this update and holding a steady rate between minor and moderate flood stage. Down LA-190 to the east, Bayou des Cannes is on Day 5 flooding at Eunice, three inches above flood stage on a slow declining trend.

In watershed Region 7 northeast LA, Tangipahoa River is going strong on Day 5 flooding at Robert, having breached moderate flood stage for a 24 hour period late last week. Flow level here is a foot and a half above flood stage and declining. Tchefuncte River flooding stopped at LA-190 near Covington this afternoon. To the east border, Pearl River continues to overflow its channel at Bogalusa, still rising Monday night. Bogue Chitto is still flooding at Bush holding a level trend. Pearl River continues to run more than two and a half feet over flood stage at Pearl River, still rising.

Check black tags for flood, blue tags for 99th percentile flows with levels updated through the day.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Louisiana drought map remains completely blank since Sunday. With 12 stations still recording active flooding, the 7-day streamflow averages in all parts of LA are higher than the seasonal average values for each location, meaning that no part of the state shows on the USGS drought map.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
