HAPPENING NOW
Cecilia BWA
Bayou Dorcheat, Bayou Bodcau Sabine and Pearl Rivers still flowing over

Water news for Thursday, February 8, 2024 - updated 1014 am CST

Drinking Water Matters
Cecilia is under BWA Thursday following a water main break yesterday. The boil advisory applies to customers in several areas, more to follow. Cecilia is a census designated place in St Martin Parish.

Rosepine issued a BWA Feb 6 impacting customers on Bailey Road, Ambler Road and Left Field Lane. Another BWA has been lifted for 8474 - 9335 Main Street and Henry Cryer Street. The advisory applies until further notice, more to follow.

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana

Five locations remain above flood stage Thursday.

In Region 1, Bayou Dorcheat flow maintained a level flow overnight, still running eight to nine inches above flood stage near Springhill. Bayou Bodcau came down by an inch overnight, currently running nine feet over flood stage near Shreveport.

Watershed Region 4 Sabine River sits at the same measured water level now as we observed on the streamflow gage last evening. The flow level is slightly more than half a foot above flood stage.

Pearl River came down a hair overnight, still under the two foot above flood stage mark, barely changing at Bogalusa. The volume of water escaping the channel 24900 cubic feet per second is a factor to be considered, where does all this water go when it is no longer contained in the river channel? Downstream at Pearl River, the water level came down to two and a half feet over flood stage. More to follow.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Louisiana drought map remains blank since Sunday, Jan 28.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
NCCOS has a new photo out of the southeast Louisiana water bodies including a clear view of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador and Lake Lery. The latest image was captured by Copernicus satellite Feb 7 at low enough wind speed to rely on the estimation of the HAB extent, 3.7 mph.

This new picture shows Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador HAB-free. Lake Lery appears to have gained a higher concentration in the HAB filling the east end of the lake compared to Feb 6 image. The color scale would put this HAB up to 800 or 900 thousand cells per 100 ml, a high concentration.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
