Pearl River flooding ends

Water news for Tuesday, February 13, 2024 - updated 125 pm CST

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana

Pearl River tucked back into its channel this morning around 630 am at Pearl River monitoring station, currently flowing inches below flood stage and receding.

Four waterways are left on the flood map Tuesday afternoon, no extreme high flows registering as of this update, apart from those actively flooding.

In Region 1, Bayou Dorcheat flow is still heading upward, now just under two feet above flood stage. Bayou Bodcau is showing no change overnight, still over nine feet past flood stage.

Watershed Region 4 Calcasieu River is up more than half a foot over flood stage at Glenmora, still gaining but slowing down, we could see a peak flow today. Also in Region 4, Sabine River continues to hold the same level, six inches over flood stage near Ruliff, TX.

Streamflows range from normal to much above normal throughout the state. More to follow.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Louisiana drought map remains blank since Sunday, Jan 28.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken yesterday, Feb 12 at wind speed 8.6 mph. This image is completely cloud covered, as the last few images have also been obscured by clouds. An image captured Feb 9 at 5.8 mph gives a clear view of the southeast water bodies, see the results on the HABs button to the right of the map, or bluegreen tag on the map.

Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador appear HAB-free. Lake Lery appears as earlier in the week with widespread HAB in the east end 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml.

Drinking Water Matters
Opelousas is under boil water advisory issued by Prairie Ronde Water for all customers connecting along Sunflower Road due to a valve replacement yesterday. The BWA will remain in effect until further notice.

Ville Platte BWA remains in effect for all customers following service outage yesterday.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
