HAPPENING NOW
Five waterways flooding
HABs around Black Bay

Water news for Friday, February 16, 2024 - 921 am CST

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana
Regions 1 and 4 each have the same two waterways flowing above flood stage Friday, and Region 7 Pearl River is still flooding near Bogalusa.

In Region 1, Bayou Dorcheat flow is currently more than two feet above flood stage near Springhill Friday morning, on a steady declining trend. Bayou Bodcau is running just under nine feet above flood stage Friday.

Watershed Region 4 Calcasieu River flow has levelled out two and a half feet above flood stage near Glenmora. Also in Region 4, Sabine River levelled off overnight, still running nine inches over flood stage near Ruliff, TX.

Pearl River continues to run over near Bogalusa in watershed Region 7 Friday morning, currently flowing a foot and four inches above flood stage at 21200 cubic feet per second on a steady rising curve.

Streamflows range from normal to much above normal throughout the state.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Louisiana drought map remains blank since Sunday, Jan 28.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken yesterday, Feb 15 at wind speed 2.4 mph. This image is mostly cloud covered, only the far east part of watershed eight is visible. The inland water bodies of watershed 8 have high concentration HAB 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml.

The last perfectly clear image was captured Feb 14 at surface wind speed 7.5 mph, gives a clear view of all the southeast Louisiana water bodies, see the results on the HABs button to the right of the map, or bluegreen tag on the map.

Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador appear HAB-free. Lake Lery appears as earlier in the week with widespread HAB in the east end 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml.

Drinking Water Matters
Terrebonne Parish has 221 customers boiling water since Tuesday. Customers of Consolidated Waterworks District No. 1 connecting along Four Point Road are affected by the BWA, in force until further notice.

Richland Parish issued a boil water advisory Feb 13 for customers at 148-260 Red Bird Road, 43-170 Weems Road, and 170 Dairy Road, effective until further notice.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
