HAPPENING NOW
Moderate drought expands in Region 7
Belle Chasse BWA

Water news for Friday, February 23, 2024 - updated 1140 am CST

Drinking Water Matters
Belle Chasse has issued a boil water advisory for the Fort Saint Leon Subdivision and portions of the Engineers Road area. The BWA has come about following damage to a water line yesterday.

Officials in Village of Sun issued a precautionary boil water advisory for all customers Wednesday, until further notice.

Leesville issued a boil water advisory Wednesday impacting customers connecting on Nona Street to Shapkoff Road, on Belview Road, north to Shapkoff Road, and on LA-171 west to Ermine Street. The BWA applies until further notice.

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana
Three water bodies remain above flood stage in four monitored locations in Louisiana Friday, even as low streamflows are sending 7-day average below normal ratings to the drought map.

Bayou Bodcau is down three inches overnight, currently seven feet three inches over flood stage near Shreveport and declining.

Region 4 Sabine River is coming down slightly, less than six inches above flood stage for the first time in weeks.

Pearl River flow is down half a foot overnight near Bogalusa, currently running a foot and a half over flood stage. The water level at Pearl River is also a foot and a half above flood stage Friday.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Region 7 west side is rated moderate drought Friday, including West Feliciana, Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana, East and West Baton Rouge, Iberville and Ascension Parishes. The west side of St Helena and Livingston Parishes are included in the moderate drought area, shifting to below normal in the east portions of St Helena and Livingston. Most of Tangipahoa Parish remains at moderate drought.

Region 1 Caddo Parish is showing up on the drought map Friday rated below normal, along with the west strip of Region 4 along the Sabine River channel. Sabine River is still flowing over flood stage near Ruliff, TX.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken Feb 22 at wind speed 3.8 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured, we will refer to the image of Feb 21 for an interpretation of HABs in the southeast Louisiana water bodies.

A localized HAB shows up along shore in the west bay Lac des Allemands matching the color scale for a moderate concentration 100 thousand cells per 100 ml. Inland water bodies of Black Bay appear with widespread high concentration HABs 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml.

Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lake Verret and Lake Palourde, Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador, Lake Lery appear HAB-free.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
