HAPPENING NOW
Pearl River flooding ends
Mandeville, Terrebonne, Basile, Moss Bluff, Merryville issue BWAs

Water news for Wednesday, February 28, 2024 - updated 1211 pm CST

Drinking Water Matters
A spate of boil advisories issued yesterday across Louisiana include St-Tammany Parish - Briarwood Terrace Water System, a boil water advisory issued yesterday for customers on North Causeway Boulevard and one connection on Forest Drive. North Causeway addresses 1451-1461, 1703-1735 and 1801-1841 are impacted, along with 3704 Forest Drive, until further notice.

Terrebonne Parish issued two boil orders yesterday. Impacted connections start at #803 LA-311 to Valve Number 33532, all addresses located along LA-311, as well as all connections on Caillou Island Court, Roustabout Street, La Terre Court, Bayou LaCarpe Road. 1180 Mulberry Road is not included in the boil water order.

Basile has had to put customers on a boil order following a line repair Tuesday. Customers from South Lewis Street to MLK Street and Railroad Street to Highway 190 are under the BWA until further notice.

Moss Bluff drinking water system encountered a loss of water pressure yesterday, resulting in a BWA for rate-payers on North Perkins Ferry Road, Noelie Street, South, North, and West Borel Drive, Hollow Cove Lane, April Drive and Goodwood Drive.

Merryville had a service disruption yesterday, water was shut off for a period of time making necessary a boil water order. The outage and subsequent BWA apply to customers connecting on Division Street, Henry Street, Brown Street and LA-389 south of the railroad tracks.

Flood and streamflow update provisional data from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana
In Region 1, Bayou Bodcau is down half a foot over the last 24 hours, currently running five feet four inches over flood stage near Shreveport on a steadily declining trend. At this rate, with no additional upstream runoff, flooding may resolve in a week to ten days.

Region 4 Sabine River gauge depth registered no change over the last 24 hours. Currently recorded at four inches over flood stage near Ruliff, Texas, the USGS 7-day streamflow average also puts this very location on the drought map rated below normal. Further inquiry has been made to the Water Science Center for Texas and Oklahoma to verify the streamflow provisional data.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
The drought map is filling in Wednesday with approximately half of the surface area of Louisiana now having some degree of drought rating.

Region 1 Caddo Parish remains in moderate drought rating, along with adjacent area to the south coming on below normal. The expanded drought in watershed Region 1 includes south Caddo, east DeSoto, east Sabine and northwest Natchitoches Parishes. Saline Bayou channel at the east edge of Region 1 is back on the drought map, rated moderate drought Wednesday. Adjacent area to the east into Region 2 appears below normal at Jackson and Winn Parishes, skipping over Grant and back to below normal in north Avoyelles Parish. Adjacent to the east in Region 3, rated below normal up to the Tensas River channel, which jumps up to moderate drought today. East of Tensas River channel, East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes are unrated with drought as of now.

Region 4 appears as reported Monday and Tuesday: Sabine River channel along the west state border and upper Calcasieu River channel through Vernon and Beauregard Parishes rated below normal. No part of Region 5, 6 and 8 appears on the drought map this week so far.
Region 7 Tangipahoa watershed remains severe drought, with adjacent area east and west area rated below normal. A narrow band along the Pearl River channel/east state line through Washington and St Tammany Parishes is still avoiding a drought rating. The west half of watershed Region 7 remains in moderate drought.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken Feb 27 at a high surface wind speed 12.3 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured. Referring to the prior image of Feb 27, this picture gave a completely clear view of all of southeast Louisiana water bodies, we will leave this interpretation up.

Lake Pontchartain, Lake Maurepas, Lake Verret, Lake Palourde, Lac des Allemands and Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador, Lake Lery, Rigoletts and the Pen all appear clear of HAB activity.

Inland water bodies of Black Bay show widespread HABs 700 thousand cells per 100 ml.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
