HAPPENING NOW
Slidell BWA
NWS: Thunderstorms continue in north central, northwest

Water news for Friday, March 15, 2024 1120 am CDT

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 524 am CDT March 15

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north central Louisiana, northwest Louisiana

DAY ONE...Thunderstorm chances will continue through the morning and early afternoon. All modes of severe weather will still be possible, with damaging winds and large hail being the primary threats. Flash flooding will also be a concern, as thunderstorms look to train in the early morning hours across portions of southern Arkansas and north Louisiana.

Rain chances will linger through the weekend, before a cold front drys things out to start the new workweek.

Impacting north central Louisiana, northwest Louisiana

Drinking Water Advisories
Slidell has issued a BWA impacting nearly 10,000 customers on the Cross Gates Water System following a water main break yesterday. Contractors digging around buried municipal infrastructure have punched through a water line for the second time in a week. Breaking water lines by digging through with construction equipment is a vector for microbiologic contamination. The BWA is required until the line can be sanitized and water tests safe. br>
Check the yellow tags on the map for details.

Streamflow Situation provisional data from USGS current streamflow monitors
Above normal streamflows for northwest Regions 1 to 3 following thunderstorms yesterday and more rain today. Normal flow levels run through east LA Region 7 Friday. Flows in Regions 4 and 5 continue below normal to much below normal, promoting this area to the drought map for the weekend ahead.

Four active flood events continue in Louisiana Friday. Bayou Dorcheat runs over and foot and a half past flood stage near Springhill, as Bayou Bodcau runs 10 inches over flood stage in Region 1. This area remains under NWA hazardous weather outlook for thunderstorms today.

Pearl River continues to flood along the east state line, up several inches overnight near Bogalusa in Region 7. Downstream flooding continues at Pearl River, more than a foot and a half over flood stage as of this report.

None of the monitored sites indicate 99th percentile flows or extreme low flows in the network Thursday.

Check black tags for flood details updated throughout the day.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
Moderate drought expands in Region 4 overnight. The moderate drought rating appeared yesterday, claiming the southeast quarter of Vernon Parish, the northeast quarter of Beauregard and a band along the west side of Allen Parish. Today, a wider swath of Allen Parish is caught up in moderate drought, fully two-thirds of the Parish from the north to the south, running south into the northeast quarter of Calcasieu and the northwest quarter of Jefferson Parish. The remaining surface area Regions 4 and 5 are still rated below normal, excepting the Sabine River channel on the west edge of Region 4 and Evangeline and Acadia Parishes in Region 5.

Harmful Algal Bloom HABs from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) satellite monitoring program
The latest image supplied by NCCOS was captured yesterday, March 14 at a wind speed 6 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured with some water showing HABs to report.

Black Bay HAB sticks out through a break in the coastal cloud mass, showing widespread HAB, concentration dropped down to 100 to 200 thousand cells per 100 ml.
