Flooding ended near Burkeville, Pearl River

June 13, 2024 849 am CDT

Current Streamflow Situation
Streamflows continue to run much above seasonal normal to high in the west even as the number of flood events is coming down, just five reference floodings going on Thursday. Much below normal flows recorded in Region 3 watershed explain the severe drought rating applied along the Tensas River channel at the west side of East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes. Tangipahoa Parish in Region 7 remains on the drought map at below normal rating another day. No extreme low flows are recorded as of this report, see below for the flood update.

WT USA Flows and Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Thirty-five flood events are recorded on the national USGS network Thursday, down from forty-three Wednesday. Two more flood events have ended in Louisiana overnight with another one looking to be out of flood stage very soon. WT USA now tracking five reference floods through the coverage area New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana. At the writing of this report, all are occurring in Louisiana.

Louisiana: Two more flooding incidents monitored by the Louisiana network of the USGS have ceased overnight. Region 7 Pearl River is back in the channel as of last evening around 6 pm. Region 4 border Sabine River ceased the overflow near Burkeville around 6 am this morning. Five stations still flooding in Louisiana, Region 1 Bayou Bodcau Lake maintains a level four feet over the basin near Shreveport. Region 4 border Sabine River is still out of the channel near Logansport, near Bon Wier and near Ruliff. East Region 4 Calcasieu River is recorded at ten inches over flood stage near Glenmora. Twelvemile Bayou is no longer flowing high near Dixie. For more information on the flood trend in Louisiana, see black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily on the map to the right.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
