Extreme drought in Region 3

Current Streamflows from the USGS network of gauges in Louisiana
Streamflows continue to run much above seasonal normal to high in Region 1 and 4, west Louisiana with another day of much below normal streamflows measured in the northeast. Tensas River channel in Region 3 has jumped from severe drought the last few days to extreme drought, the highest rating on the drought map. In the east, Region 7 Tangipahoa Parish has also escalated deeper into drought, Saturday condition recorded as severe. There are no extreme low flows recorded on the network at the time of this report. Three reference points in the streamflow network continue to register above flood stage overnight, see below.

Twenty-nine streamflow gauges record flows above flood stage through the US monitoring network Saturday, down from thirty-two yesterday. WT USA follows the water levels and volume on three of these reference flood events now, and all three pertain to the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana: Sabine River flooding continues, down two feet overnight near Bon Wier, still two and a half feet above flood stage, overflowing about the same measure above flood stage near Ruliff. Region 1 Bayou Bodcau Lake is settling down slowly, down three inches overnight, presently three feet nine inches over the basin near Shreveport. As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds.
