Tangipahoa Parish in extreme drought

June 21, 2024 1035 am CDT

Current Streamflows from the USGS network of gauges in Louisiana
West Louisiana streamflows continue above normal to much above normal again Friday, the below normal streamflow conditions prevail in the east. Tangipahoa Parish has escalated to the top floor of drought ratings, while the west side continues with flooding, the east has two watersheds in extreme drought conditions. Region 3 Tensas River channel continues in extreme drought from East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes west sides. An area of Region 7 along the Amite River channel spreading out to the west from St Helena, Livingston, East Feliciana and East Baton Rouge Parishes to include adjacent area in West Feliciana and Point Coupee remain rated below normal.

From The Sensors provisional data on river flooding from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Thirty-seven streamflow gauges indicate flooding in the USA today, up from twenty-six Thursday. WT tracks the flow levels on four reference flood events, as the sensors read and record it, all occurring in the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana: Region 7 Amite River continues to run above flood stage at Hwy 22 near Maurepas. Ongoing since June 4, Region 1 watershed's Bayou Bodcau Lake is down six inches overnight near Shreveport, currently recorded a foot and a half over the basin. In Region 4, west boundary river Sabine water level has come down a few more inches overnight, currently running ten inches over near Logansport. Downstream near Ruliff the water level is down to nine inches above flood stage, the flow volume has dropped slightly also, supporting the receding flow trend. For more info on the flooding in Louisiana, see black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily here.

Drinking water advisories
Terrebonne Parish: A BWA has been issued for water customers connecting along Highway 56, including 4716 – 4818 Hwy 56 and connecting Streets Thursday, until further notice.

Caldwell Parish: A water line break yesterday has been repaired, those residents of Kelly connecting on Emma Lane and Bass Road are under boil water advisory until further notice.

Jeff Davis Parish: The water commission has issued a boil advisory for customers in Roanoke following emergency line repairs yesterday. Customers connecting west of Hwy 395, 1st and 2nd Ave, West 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and Maple Streets are included in this advisory until further notice.

East Richland Parish Water System issued a boil advisory due to repairs completed on Wednesday. This advisory applies to customers on Fallen Road and 370 Highway 854.

Beauregard Parish: Ragley has issued a BWA for customers on Lonnie Cole, West Cole, East Cole, DeFries, Mickey Cole, LeJune, Singletary Roads until further notice, no reason given.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
