Drinking Water Advisories
Iberville Parish: A BWA was issued for customers within the Iberville Parish Intracoastal Water System West in Plaquemine on Wednesday June 26. The reason for the advisory is not given. The Intracoastal Water System West serves a population of 6465 through more than 2000 service connections from a surface water source.

Rapides: Alexandria water customers on McArthur Drive were impacted by a BWA following repairs to a fire hydrant Wednesday.

HAB Tracker satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science

WT follows the movement and growth of harmful algal blooms (HABs) as provided by the satellite monitoring program of the NCCOS for New York's Lake Champlain, Ohio's Lake Erie and Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain and surrounding area. A reliable interpretation of satellite images is made in clear conditions at wind speed less than 4 pm, where the appearance and extent of HABs is matched to a color scale for concentration. High concentration HABs are known to produce algal toxins of concern for raw drinking water sources and recreational water bodies.

New York
Lake Champlain satellite monitoring program was launched to the public in 2024. HABs appeared prolific along the shorelines, islands and open water at the end of April, a cloudy spring season has obscured a clear view of the water most days since. The June 26 image of Lake Champlain reveals widespread HAB in the northeast arm on the Canadian side of the border, matching the color scale for high concentration 400 thousand cells per 100 ml. The latest image was captured June 27, mostly cloud obscured. The northeast HAB mass is visible between clouds. Two more HABs have been reported in Lake Champlain June 26, these have been confirmed by NY Department of Environmental Conservation off the sheltered bay shores of Point au Roche. Plan you beach days for clear access to your favorite recreational water bodies. Louisiana: Southeast LA water bodies are captured in a wide angle pass by the Copernicus-Sentinel III satellite, catching Lake Pontchartrain to Black Bay in frame. Friday's image upload was captured June 27 at a surface wind speed of 9.3 mph. Lake Pontchartrain displays visible HAB activity in the northeast 2 to 3 nm off shore from Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge at a low concentration matching the color scale around 50 thousand cells per 100 ml. The June 27 image is partially cloud obscured, Lakes Verret, Palourde, Boeuf have widespread HAB at around 500 to 600 thousand cells per 100 ml. Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier appear in the range of 400 thousand cells per 100 ml. The latest HAB report for Louisiana is available here.

Ohio: Lake Erie west basin is captured by the NCCOS monitoring satellite, the latest upload taken June 27 at wind speed 9.2 mph. The image is mostly cloud obscured with "Sandy" the Sandusky Bay HAB glowing its extreme high concentration 2 million cells per 100 ml signature appearance showing its presence and position through breaks in the cloud cover. The HAB noted yesterday north of Maumee Bay along the Michigan shoreline near Monroe is visible here also, concentration approaching 900 thousand cells per 100 ml. Sandy appeared in Sandusky Bay on June 11, since expanding to fill the inner and outer bay areas and accelerating in concentration to extreme levels not seen at this time of year, nor in this location in 2023. As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds.
