 1000 gallons of wastewater released in Region 3

Hazardous Spill Incidents as reported to and released by Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality


For the week of August 19th - 25th, 2024 updated Aug 24 941 am CDT

New files released by LDEQ

Region 3: On July 31, 1000 gallons of wastewater was released into the soil after bypass pumps failed to shut off on the 1500 block of Pearl St in Ouachita, Monroe Parish.

Region 5: On August 7, an unreported about of diesel was discharged onto the ground on Bake Hughes Dr in Lafayette, Broussard Parish. The cause of this incident is unknown at this time.

Spill incidents previously posted in 2024:



    Region 2: On July 22, during a heavy rainfall, 5000 gallons of storm water was released from a storage facility on the 100 block of Mill St in Hodge, Jackson.
    Region 5: On July 30, balls of tar were reported on the sand at Rutherford Beach in Creole, Cameron Parish. The source of the tar is not known. On July 20, a burned transformer pole caused 55 gallons of mineral oil to discharge onto the ground along Walker Rd in Lafayette, Lafayette Parish.
    Region 5: On June 11, an unreported amount of sewage was released from a broken pipe into the yard of a private residence on Prairie St in Monroe, Ouachita Parish.


    Region 5: On June 11, an unknown amount of wastewater was reported to be impacting a private residence while it was running through a drainage ditch on J Patout Burns Rd in Jeanerette, Iberia Parish. On July 16, it was reported that behind an apartment complex on Malet St the back was filled with standing sewage. The cause of this release and location is unknown at this time, and occured in Amaudville, St Landry Parish.

    Region 7: On June 13, an unknown amount of diesel was released from a barge and impacted the Tickfaw River in Livingston, Springfield Parish.
    Region 5: On June 22, a large area of West Cote Blanche Bay had a sheen on it from an unknown oil source in St Mary Parish.

    Region 5: On June 10, sewage in an unknown quantity has been dumped into a canal by someone taking residence in a docked boat on Harbor Dr in Morgan City , in St Mary Parish.

    Region 8: On June 10, satellite imagery noted a large oil spill at an un reported location in St Bernard Parish.
    Region 4: On June 6, 40 gallons of diesel was released onto the ground from an overflowed truck tank on Lowe Grout Rd in Iowa of Calcasieu Parish.

    Region 4: On May 12, a 30 ft fire was reported due to the burning of metal, rubber and plastic on East Park Manor Dr in Lake Charles of Calcasieu Parish. May 15, a transformer in the area of Fifth Ave caught on fire and released unreported amounts of mineral oil in Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish. On Monday May 13, a transformer was reported to have fallen over off Louise Goode Rd causing mineral oil to be released in unknown quantities in Dequincy, of Calcasieu Parish. Lastly, on May 13 a compressor station on a property malfunctioned and was releasing a liquid into the ditch causing the vegetation to die and then flowing into an unnamed creek off Blunt Mill Rd in Grand Cane of DeSoto Parish.

    Region 7: On May 16th two spills impacted Watershed Region 7. The first that occurred was an unspecified amount of sewage was released into a ditch from a malfunctioning pump station on N Corbin St in Walker, of Livingston Parish. The second that occurred on this day was an unknown contaminate impacting the ditches along E Airline Hwy in Gramercy of St James Parish. Last, on May 13 due to heavy rains in the area unknown amounts of sewage sludge was released into the soil from an overflow off Hwy 3081 in Pearl River of St Tammany Parish.

  • Region 3 - On May 13th gas condensate was spilled from a storage container during a lightning storm on Oak St in Dubach, Lincoln Parish
  • Region 5 - On May 13th a resident reported visible sheen in his boat slip measuring 30 by 50 ft from an unknown source on the Vermillion River in Abbeville in Vermillion Parish. May 3, paint spray and unreported amounts of waste fluids are seen to be deliberately spilled into a drain off Andrew Rd in Lafayette Parish.
  • Apr 16 - unknown amount of sewage reported to be draining from a house that is leading to a ditch impacting the soil on Olive Rd in Crowley - Acadia - Region 5
  • April 16 - dead fish reported in a coulee behind a residents home on Burlington Circle in Broussard - Lafayette - investigation reveals 40 catfish that were gutted and dumped into the water - Region 5
  • April 13 - 20 gallons of bilge slop reported spilled into the Mississippi River during transfer to another vessel in Delta - Madison - absorbent boom applied - Region 2
  • April 13 - 1 barrel of unknown material noted to be floating on Lake Charles in Calcasieu - Region 4
  • April 4 - unknown amount of unknown material reported deliberately dumped from a vac truck next to an unnamed river off E Butcher Switch Rd in Lafayette - Lafayette - Region 5
  • April 1 - unknown amount of sewage reported spilled to the soil from a damaged fitting line on Kingston Rd in Shreveport - Caddo - Region 1
  • April 1 - unknown amount of black oily substance reported by the resident who lives at the location and is from an unknown source on Muyrl Ln in Prairieville - Ascension - Region 7
  • March 21 - unknown amount of sewage reported spilled onto the ground from a 250 gallon above ground septic tank coming from a trailer on Herndon St in Shreveport - Caddo - Newton County Reservoir impacted through a small stream - Region 1
  • March 14 - unknown amount of water reported to be backing up to a neighborhood due to a construction site blocking the natural drainage area on Priutt Rd in Sterlington - Union - Region 3
  • March 9 - unknown amount of sediment and waste water reported spilled on the ground at a private residence on Perryville Rd in Bastrop- Morehouse
  • March 1 - 300 gallons of sewage reported spilled onto the ground from a malfunctioning lift station on Kingland Dr in Hammond - Tangipahoa - Region 7
  • Feb 22 - unknown amount of solid waste being dumped into a dumpster off Tom Herbert Rd in Lake Charles - Calcasieu - Region 4
  • Feb 23 - 50 gallons of diesel reported spilled from a fuel pump due to a vehicle hitting it off Hwy 1 in Lockport - Lafourche - drain impacted - fire department on site to block off drain to wait for clean up crew and have applied ground dry - Region 6
  • Feb 17 - unknown oil sheen reported to be half a mile long on the Atchafalaya River in St Mary - St Mary - Detergent smell and black residue reported - Region 5
  • Feb 15 - unknown amount of sewage reported to be spilling on the ground since January 2024 off Hwy 397 in Lake Charles - Calcasieu - Region 4
  • Feb 5 - unknown amount of wastewater reported spilled deliberately in Farmerville - Union - Region 3

Any transporter, manufacturer, storage facility, or anyone involving the handling of any Regionulated hazardous material must contact the LSP immediately to report any spillage or threat to public safety.

    An emergency spill situation is defined as any condition that could reasonably be expected to endanger the health and safety of the public or cause significant adverse impact to the environment.

    Louisiana's oil spill rules generally follow the federal standards.

    Any unauthorized spills of one barrel (42 gallons) of oil or more is considered the reportable amount.  These and spills of unknown amount must be reported to DEQ within 24 hours, or in the case of an emergency event, see above, call State Police immediately.

    All reportable spills (emergency or not) must be followed up within 7 days with a written report.  Consult with LA DEQ for guidance on detailing your spill incident, check the national requirements for reporting oil spills, and LA release notification requirements.  Seek out information on Spill Prevention Planning.

     “oil” includes but is not limited to: gasoline, crude oil, fuel oil, diesel oil, lubricating oil, sludge, oil refuse, oil mixed with wastes, and any other petroleum related product.

    “chemical” spills include all toxic substances, note “Any transporter, manufacturer, storage facility, or anyone involving the handling of any Regionulated hazardous material must contact the LSP immediately to report any spillage or threat to public safety.”  Refer to LA Department of Health Environmental Epidemiology and Toxicology page for more information on reporting (https://ldh.la.gov/page/834)

    Note that all spills must be cleaned up, whether or not they are reportable.

    The OEC Surveillance Division protects the citizens of the state by conducting inspections of permitted and non-permitted facilities, by responding to environmental incidents such as unauthorized releases, spills and citizen complaints, natural disasters, and other emergency situations, by providing compliance assistance to the Regionulated community when appropriate, by assessing and monitoring air and water quality for compliance with standards, and by promoting case information management for vigorous and timely resolution of issues of non-compliance.
