WT HAB Tracker from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS) and State sources where available

A program for the advanced detection and monitoring of HABs in the USA is a collaborative effort by a number of national entities including NOAA, NASA, CDC and others. The focused effort of these agencies has accelerated the development of technologies for sensing and monitoring the harmful blooms, leading to better understanding of their growth, movement and potential toxicity. With careful monitoring and knowledge transfer to and from the local experts, negative health effects can be minimized for wildlife and human populations. According to the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science forecasting program information on line, "We have now reached a point in several regions where the understanding of these blooms is mature enough to put into place the detection and monitoring tools, and to bring these systems into an operational capacity." The benefits of these efforts to study and comprehend the impact and risk of cyanotoxins leads to better drinking water treatment and increased safety in consumption of fish and shellfish and in the enjoyment of recreational water bodies and beaches.

Louisiana: The latest image of Lake Pontchartrain and southeast Louisiana water bodies was captured August 29 at wind speed 12.7 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured, we see lake Fields lakewide HAB 1 to 2 million cells per ml. Black Bay widespread HAB is visible at 1 million cells per ml. Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas are cloud obscured. The previous picture showed Pontchartrain and Maurepas HAB free, or with HAB too low to detect. Bayou Fortier shows off a widespread HAB around 2 million cells. See the Louisiana images here.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
St Martin Parish: St. Martinville is under a system-wide Boil Water Advisory due to a water leak that started on Port Street Wednesday. To locate and repair the leak is expected to require city-wide service outage, all water customers will be under the boil advisory following resumption of service.

Region 2 watershed Town of Chatham customers of New Hope St. Claire are boiling water today following a main line break and repair Wednesday. The boil order is a precaution against microbiological contamination that can enter the distribution lines in a break and repair. Chatham Water System in Jackson Parish serves just over 1500 residential customers with water from a groundwater well source. The facility has had some non-compliance issues with the SDWA, no serious violations noted.
