NWS issues urgent winter storm warning for New Orleans area - up to 6 inches of snow and sleet tonight

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT CST TUESDAY NIGHT...
Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 3 and 6 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze for portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.

COLD WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM CST TUESDAY......EXTREME COLD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING
For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 14 expected. For the Extreme Cold Watch, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 10 above possible for portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi.

For the Cold Weather Advisory, from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM CST Tuesday. For the Extreme Cold Watch, from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.

IMPACTS...Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.

To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Drain in-ground sprinkler systems and cover above ground pipes.

Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.

Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

Streamflow Situation from the network of monitoring stations of the US Geological Survey in Louisiana
Streamflows have dropped lower over the weekend with a couple of stations reporting water levels below the tenth percentile in three of state's eight watershed regions Monday. Two sites continue to report active flooding status, the Calcasieu River running half a foot out of the channel near Glenmora in Region 4, Sabine River still seven to eight inches over the channel near Ruliff TX monitoring station.

Fair conditions reported for New Orleans MLK Day, 34 degrees, the high expected near 41. The winter storm expected to start over night will bring a chance of snow showers before 9pm Tuesday, turning to freezing rain between 9pm and midnight. Ice and snow accumulation is expected, wind chill is also going to be an issue as wind will gust up to 25 mph. Fair in the northwest, 28 degrees in Shreveport with a high today up to 39 in the sun.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Plaquemines Parish: Belle Chasse is under a BWA after a car damaged a fire hydrant and a utility pole near Belle Chasse High School yesterday. Belle Chasse Water District serves 19644 residents plus local businesses from a surface water source in watershed Region 8.

Richland Parish: East Richland Water System issued a BWA following a water main break on Friday. The BWA applies to all customers connecting on Boone Road, Rhodes Road, Foster Road, Jones Lane, and customers from 57-50 McHand Drive, 710-831 Collins Drive, 533-916 Highway 854. East Richland WW District serves 2835 residents plus local business connections from a groundwater well source, purchased from another licensed water treatment facility in watershed Region 3.

St. Landry Parish: The Town of Grand Coteau Water System issued a BWA Friday after a major waterline break which caused road closures and school shutdowns. Grand Coteau serves drinking water to 1650 residents from a groundwater source in watershed Region 5. More to follow.

The new EPA quarterly compliance report is out, including the new Serious Violator list. Louisiana has 124 Serious Violator drinking water facilities out of total 1263 active facilities with SDWA permits as of the last audited quarter, ended Sep 30, 2024.
