Town of Basile Water System - groundwater purchased
Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Evangeline Parish: Water customers in the Town of Basile came under a BWA following a water main break Thursday. Customers connecting in the Hebert Subdivision and surrounding areas are impacted with this boil order, including residents of Pine Street, Magnolia Avenue, Stagg Ave West of Magnolia Avenue, Lakewood Apartments, Basile Eunice Hwy West of Magnolia Avenue, Log Cabin Road, Riviere Loop, Wilburton Lane, and Putnam Road.
Town of Basile Water System distributes potable water to 2400 Evangeline and Acadia County residents from a groundwater well source purchased from another licensed drinking water facility. According to US EPA compliance records, the last sanitary survey was completed in June 2023. Signficant deficiencies were noted in finished water storage, and non-compliance is noted in two of the last twelve quarters, specifically the treatment technique, Groundwater Rule.
St. Bernard Parish: St. Bernard Parish Waterworks has issued a BWA for residents on Paris Road from First Assembly Church to the Parish line at Bayou Bienvenue Bridge following a water main break on Tuesday.
St Bernard Parish Waterworks supplies potable water for 44 thousand residents plus commercial buildings from a surface water source in watershed Region 8. This facility has a squeaky clean record with the EPA, no violations and no issues of non-compliance in the last three years.
US EPA has released the latest quarterly reporting audit of US drinking water facilities compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Louisiana drinking water facilities lost a bit of ground in the current quarter, the second consecutive period with an increase in the number of residents served by serious violator facilities. As of the stats released this month, 437,779 residents, 9.5% of Louisiana's population, have their drinking water provided by facilities with significant violations of the SDWA. Serious violations include exceeding maximum contaminant levels for any number of harmful substances regulated in US drinking water.
Of 1263 licensed drinking water facilities in Louisiana, the number with a perfect operational record has dropped slightly, from 65.4% to 62.6% as of the latest audit. The Louisiana Serious Violator List has gone from 110 to 124 facilities as of the latest information available. WTLA.us congratulates 17 facilities considered Enforcement Priorities in the last quarter that have amended significant violations and been cleared from this list of drinking water notoriety.
See the WTLA.us Serious Violator List, January 2025, here.
Streamflow Situation from the network of monitoring stations of the US Geological Survey
Water levels have normalized in the west, Region 3 west side records above seasonal normal with west central area Region 2, 4 and 5 having normal to much above normal flows, even a record high water level today recorded on the flooding Calcasieu River near Kinder, the highest level recorded on Groundhog Day in 75 years. See the front page map for flood sites in black.
Extreme drought has broken away from Region 3, leaving parts of Claiborne, Union and all of Lincoln Parish downgraded to below normal status. Severe drought has released watershed Region 7 around the Bogue Chitto channel, with Washington and St Tammany Parish downgraded to below normal drought rating. Tangipahoa Parish is rated moderate drought. West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee Parishes are still rated below normal, the remaining area of Louisiana is unrated.
