HAPPENING NOW
Tangipahoa River, Bayou Pierre low flows
Region 7 drought relief
Up to the minute water news for Thursday, December 28, 2023 - last updated 355 pm CST
Streamflow Situation
Seasonal normal streamflows continue in the northwest and east Louisiana today. Tensas River flow at Tendal has improved slightly, no longer flowing low. Bayou Bartholemew and Chemin-A-Haut Bayou in Region 3 are still flowing at extreme low Thursday. Region 5 contributes a low flow this morning in Bayou Teche at the Keystone Lock and Dam. By the afternoon update, Tangipahoa River monitoring station at Robert is signalling extreme low, as is Bayou Pierre monitor at Lake End. See the red-brown tags on the map for the low flow details.
Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Wednesday brought a change to the drought map as Region 7 aligned with Regions 6 and 8 in seasonal normal. Left on the drought map in Region 7, the Tangipahoa River watershed running through Tangipahoa Parish still at severe drought rating, and the Pearl River watershed, claiming the east edge of Washington and St Tammany Parishes in moderate drought.
To the west side, the big change today is extreme drought breaking off the Tensas River watershed in Region 3. A long-standing extreme hydrologic drought extending from East and West Carroll Parishes down to Tensas Parish has downshifted to moderate drought today.
The new patch of extreme drought showing up in central Morehouse Parish in watershed Region 3 yesterday remains today. Severe drought rating still applies to east Morehouse, Richland and Franklin Parishes with the immediate area around the Tensas River rated below normal.
Watershed Region 1 in the northwest remains largely rated below normal, excluding west Bossier Parish. An area of moderate drought clings to Bayou Pierre channel. Watershed Region 2 is similarly rated, mostly below normal dropping into moderate drought in Grant and LaSalle Parishes. Watersheds Region 4 and 5 persist in severe drought in all but Evangeline and Acadia Parishes, sitting at moderate drought.
Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.
