Streamflow Situation from USGS real time streamflow monitoring stations around the eight watersheds of the state
Below normal flows statewide over the weekend have led to the seven day average falling severely below seasonal normal.

Five monitoring stations are recording extreme low levels Tuesday, updates in progress, more to follow.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Extreme drought ratings remain on Region 3 Tensas River channel and Region 7 Tangipahoa River channel Tuesday with a National Weather Service flood watch issued this morning for possible flooding due to excessive rainfall and runoff in Region 7 anticipated through the day Wednesday.

Severe drought in west LA Tuesday, the severe rating applied to all of Region 4 and most of Region 5. Acadia and Evangeline Parishes are rated moderate drought.

Moderate drought has taken over a larger area of Region 3 today, including Morehouse, Richland and Frankin Parishes. Grant and LaSalle Parishes in Region 2 are still rated moderate drought Tuesday, along with Region 1 Caddo, DeSoto and central Natchitoches, Bossier Parish in Region 1.

Region 7 is rated below normal in area not otherwise designated extreme drought. Central Washington Parish in Region 7, and all of Watershed regions 6 and 8 are unrated on the drought map.

Red-brown tags on the map refer to extreme low flows.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

HABs Report from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) satellite monitoring program
The latest image from NCCOS was captured Jan 22 at wind speed 8 mph. This view is mostly cloud obscured with no visible HAB activity showing on Lake Pontchartrain, Irish Bayou, Lake Maurepas, Lake Verret, Lake Palourde, Catouache or Lake Salvador. Lake Lery and Black Bay inland water bodies are cloud obscured in the Jan 22 image, however the HABs are visible Jan 21 at 300 to 400 thousand cells per 100 ml.
