HAPPENING NOW
Rosepine BWA
Calcasieu River flooding ends near Glenmora

Water news for Wednesday, February 7, 2024 - updated 621 pm CST

Drinking Water Matters
Rosepine issued a BWA Feb 6 impacting customers on Bailey Road, Ambler Road and Left Field Lane. Another BWA has been lifted for 8474 - 9335 Main Street and Henry Cryer Street.

West Monroe issued a BWA following restoration of service yesterday. The service was interrupted to repair a fire hydrant, effective for all customers until further notice.

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations around the eight watersheds of Louisiana

Five locations remain above flood stage Wednesday evening.

In Region 1, Bayou Dorcheat flow has levelled off Wednesday, the steady decline trend has stalled with no discernable change Wednesday, still running approximately nine inches above flood stage near Springhill. Bayou Bodcau moved in the downward direction today, though not by much, still running more than nine feet above flood stage near Shreveport.

Watershed Region 4 Sabine River water level is still bouncing up and down, the level at this update is higher than it was at noon. The general direction of the trend is receding, more than half a foot above flood stage Wednesday evening.

Pearl River came just under two feet above flood stage at Bogalusa. Downstream at Pearl River, the water level is still north of two and a half feet over. More to follow.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.

Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Louisiana drought map remains blank since Sunday, Jan 28.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
NCCOS has a new photo out of the southeast Louisiana water bodies including a clear view of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Verret, Lake Palourde and many more. The image captured Feb 6 at wind speed 8.1 mph is still above the wind speed for a reliable estimate of the bloom extent. With high wind, the HABs can become submerged and escape detection by the satellite full color imaging. The Feb 6 capture shows Lake Lery in a very similar disposition as Feb 4, full from shore to shore in the east half of the lake with a HAB of high concentration 700 thousand cells per 100 ml.

From the Feb 6 image, all other water bodies appear HAB free, bearing in mind any HAB could be hiding below the surface at this wind speed. Check back daily for new satellite image updates.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
