Much below normal streamflows return

Water news for Tuesday, February 20, 2024 - 931 am CST

Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana
Bayou Dorcheat is flooding near Springhill, less than a foot above flood stage and steadily coming down. Bayou Bodcau is still flooding more than eight feet above flood stage.

Watershed Region 4 Calcasieu River flow still more than a foot over near Glenmora Tuesday. Sabine River is running a level seven inches above flood stage near Ruliff, TX.

Pearl River flow appears to have leveled off near Bogalusa, currently running two feet and three inches over flood stage. Floodwater is receding downstream at Pearl River, currently seven inches above flood stage.

Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.

HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken Feb 19 at wind speed 10.1 mph. This image is a clear view of the southeast Louisiana water bodies. Inland water bodies of Black Bay widespread high concentration HABs 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml.

Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador appear HAB-free. Lake Lery appears HAB free in this image.

Slidell is under boil water advisory since a water main break on Friday, impacting customers connecting at 100-1081 Rue Verand 1000-1140 Rue Corton, 1000-1150 Rue Latour, 1000-1150 Rue Orleans, 1000-1150 Rue Toulouse, 1000-1150 Rue Bordeaux, 1000-1150 Rue Calis, 1000-1150 Rue Limoges, 1100-1607 Rue Miramon, 1500-1614 Rue Lemans, 1130-1504 Gause Boulevard, 1100-1151 Rue Rochelle.

Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.
