WEEKEND WATER REPORT
Severe drought lands on Tangipahoa watershed
Ringgold BWA
Water news for Sunday, February 25, 2024 - updated 1245 pm CST
Drinking Water Matters
Ringgold issued a system-wide boil water advisory following a loss of water pressure Friday. The advisory is a precautionary measure taken in case microbial contamination entered the system during the low flow period. Testing will establish when it is safe to resume normal water use.
Flood Update from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana
Three water bodies remain above flood stage in Sunday as Pearl River flooding ends early Sunday morning near Bogalusa. Pearl River got back under the 18 ft minor flood stage around 6 am this morning, still flooding downstream, about a foot over at Pearl River in Region 7.
Bayou Bodcau is down considerably, currently running six and a half feet over flood stage, still many days away from the end of flooding near Shreveport, on a steady declining trend.
Region 4 Sabine River monitor is throwing the same digits as Friday, the gauge may be malfunctioning. More to follow.
Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.
Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Region 7 skipped ahead to severe drought, leading the dry competition in Louisiana this weekend. The west side of Region 7 remains at moderate drought with a reprieve to below normal at east St Helena and Livingston, then escalating to severe drought rating at the Tangipahoa river channel. Adjacent surface area east of Tangipahoa has taken on a below normal rating, including most of Washington and St Tammany Parishes, sparing only the east edge along the Pearl River, still flooding at Pearl River.
Region 1 Caddo Parish stepped up from below normal to moderate drought this weekend, adding the Saline Bayou channel at below normal. To the east in Region 3, a great area is rated below normal Sunday including east Morehouse, West Carroll, Richland and Franklin Parishes area laying west of Tensas River. South into Region 4, the Sabine River channel is rated below normal, which is curious as the USGS streamflow gauges are sending provisional data signals indicating Sabine River is still flowing over flood stage near Ruliff, TX. Three days of the same recorded level and a drought rating indicates a malfunction, USGS has been asked to look into this. More to follow.
HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken Feb 24 at wind speed 4 mph. This image is has Lake Pontchartrain blocked out, some other water bodies are visible.
Lake Maurepas, Lake Verret, Lake Palourds, Lac des Allemands, Bayou Fortier all appear HAB free. Lake Cataouache and Lake Salvador are cloud obscured. Inland water bodies of Black Bay appear with widespread high concentration HABs 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml.
Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.
USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
