HAPPENING NOW
Iowa water main break and BWA
East Richland Parish BWA
Water news for Thursday, February 29, 2024 - 1231 pm CST
Drinking Water Matters
Calcasieu Parish - Officials in the Town of Iowa have issued a system-wide boil water advisory following a water main break yesterday. The BWA is in effect until water tests confirm no microbiological contamination entered the distribution lines during the loss of pressure and repair.
East Richland Parish has issued a boil water advisory for customers south of I-20 east of Mid Valley Road after the main waterline went out yesterday. The BWA is necessary after all line breaks and repairs to ensure no contamination in the water, once the tests confirm the water clean and safe, all good to drink from the tap. More to follow.
Flood and streamflow update provisional data from USGS real-time streamflow monitoring stations throughout Louisiana
In Region 1, Bayou Bodcau is now under the five foot above flood stage mark, still a long way to go but trending in the right direction for the flood to end near Shreveport.
Region 4 Sabine River is still lingering four inches over flood stage near Ruliff. Curiously enough, this flow level is considered seasonal normal by the current streamflow ratings, while also showing up below normal on the drought map. This site has been overflowing minor flood stage for weeks. Our research team is busy trying to understand how this works, more to follow!
Check black tags on the map for flood levels, provisional data courtesy of the USGS streamflow sensors placed into LA rivers, bogues and bayous.
Drought Map from USGS 7-day average streamflows compared to historic averages
Thursday marks a red letter event for Louisiana. The drought map now contains area of extreme hydrological drought, coloring the state map with a stripe of bright red alarm.
Region 3 Bayou Macon-Tensas River channel area jumped from moderate to extreme, the highest rating on the USGS Drought Map today. The seven-day average flow volume measured by monitors on the Tensas River at Tendal and Newlight, Bayou Macon measured near Delhi had to be low enough, long enough to see this rating light up on Louisiana surface area for the first time in months.
The LA drought map tipped overnight from a 50:50 drought:normal proposition today favoring more surface area on the drought map. A large area of east Region 5 watershed has landed below normal today, beginning at Rapides and Avoyelles Parishes extending south to the Gulf Coast.
Region 1 Caddo Parish hopped up to severe drought. Adjacent area south is still rated below normal from south Caddo, east DeSoto, east Sabine and northwest Natchitoches Parishes. Saline Bayou channel at the east edge of Region 1 is still rated moderate drought. Adjacent area to the east into Region 2 and 3 is below normal from Union and Claiborne, Lincolcn, Jackson and Winn, leaving Grant unrated, below normal from Rapides and all the the way to the coast. East of the Tensas River channel, East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes are still unrated.
Region 4 appears as reported all week, Sabine River channel along the west state border with the upper Calcasieu River channel Vernon and Beauregard Parishes rated below normal.
Region 6 Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge and Iberville have attained the rating of moderate drought right up against the moderate drought rated area of east Region 7. Tangipahoa River remains at the severe drought rating, melting into below normal in Washington and St.Tammany Parishes, still bare along the Pearl River channel on the east state line.
HAB Update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
The latest sat photo from NCCOS was taken Feb 27 at a high surface wind speed 12.3 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured. Referring to the prior image of Feb 27, this picture gave a completely clear view of all of southeast Louisiana water bodies, we will leave this interpretation up.
Lake Pontchartain, Lake Maurepas, Lake Verret, Lake Palourde, Lac des Allemands and Bayou Fortier, Lake Cataouache, Lake Salvador, Lake Lery, Rigoletts and the Pen all appear clear of HAB activity.
Inland water bodies of Black Bay show widespread HABs 700 thousand cells per 100 ml.
Note WaterToday reports day-to-day changes recorded by USGS streamflow monitors on rivers and tributaries located in Louisiana, along with monitors upstream in the Mississippi River basin: Ohio, Georgia and southwest New York state. USGS creates a drought map from 7-day average streamflow readings, by comparing the average with the historic weekly normal flow value for each location. The drought ratings are below normal, moderate hydrologic drought, severe drought and extreme drought.
USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
