HAPPENING NOW
Flooding expands over the weekend
Paulina BWA Region 7
Water news for Tuesday, March 12, 2024 1139 am CDT
Flood-wise driving, flood-smart autos
Louisiana has experienced an extended period of flooding in 2024 with many roadways and highways impacted by the nation's most common natural disaster.
Since January the main rivers and tributaries of Louisiana's eight watershed regions have flowed outside of their channels. Bayou Bodcau, Bayou Dorcheat, Sabine River, Calcasieu River, Bogue Chitto, Pearl River and others have been flooding on and off causing disruption to traffic and other public safety concerns.
Looking to the emergency preparedness and public safety advice offered by state and federal agencies, the main messaging for flood safety is aimed at drivers.
Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
According to Centers for Disease Control(CDC) "Flooding causes more deaths than any other hazard related to thunderstorms. The most common flood deaths occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood waters." The key piece of advice from CDC: "Never drive through flooded areas. As little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle."
How can a driver confronted with water flowing across the roadway know how deep the water is? What happens when a vehicle's electrical system shuts down? WTLA.us asked auto manufacturers around the world about flood safety measures built in to their vehicles. Watch here for the responses as we find out which new cars rolling off the line in 2024 come equipped with live saving flood safety measures. More to follow.

Streamflow Situation provisional data from USGS current streamflow monitors
Streamflows in the northwest Regions 1 to 3 show normal to above normal Tuesday, below normal to much below normal in the southwest Region 4. Over in the east, the rivers and bayous are flowing normal to above normal. Four monitored locations are flooding statewide. No other stations report flowing above 99th percentile, no extreme low flows indicated on the network.
Bayou Bodcau continues to flood in Region 1 Tuesday, running a foot over flood stage near Shreveport as of noon. Bayou Dorcheat is still up more than a foot and a half over flood stage Tuesday.
In Region 4, normal streamflows dominate the Sabine River monitors while the flooding of Sabine River finally knocks off near Ruliff, TX. This site has recorded water levels consistent with the seasonal normal while also flooding for many weeks. Adjacent surface area in Region 4 continues to log below normal to much below normal flows Tuesday, we expext to see Region 4 on the drought map.
Region 7, Bogue Chitto flooding stopped around 715 am this morning near Bush. Pearl River continues to overflow near Bogalusa and downstream at Pearl River in Region 7.
Check black tags for flood details updated throughout the day.
Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
A small area in Region 3 north-central Morehouse Parish and most of Region 4 rated below normal, all that shows on the Louisiana drought map Tuesday. The west edge of Region 4 along the Sabine River channel is free of a drought rating as Sabine River streamflows have been rated consistently normal over the past 7 days.
