SPECIAL REPORT ON VEHICLES AND FLOOD SAFETY
In search of a flood-smart ride
March 12 2024 - updated March 13 455 pm CDT
Louisiana is no stranger to the nation's most common natural disaster.
When flooding strikes, we look to the emergency preparedness and public safety advice offered by state and national agencies. What may come as a surprise to some, the flood safety mantra is aimed at drivers.
Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
"Never drive through flooded areas. As little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle," states Centers for Disease Control (CDC). According to the CDC, "The most common flood deaths occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood waters."
How can a driver confronted with water flowing across the roadway know how deep the floodwater is? What happens when a vehicle's electrical system shuts down? WTLA.us spoke with representatives of auto manufacturers at the 2024 International Auto Show to find out which vehicles have flood safety features. As more vehicles rolling off the production lines are fully electric, how might this change the risk for drivers and their passengers when dealing with flooding?
We put these questions to Volvo, automotive industry safety leader, to Polestar, another Swedish vehicle, Ford-Lincoln, General Motors and Nissan.
We reached out to kVA by UL, safety technicians involved with ISO 26262 and the requirements of safety management processes for automotive engineering. We asked the experts in the ISO standard for vehicle safety about advancements and trends related to flood safety.
Check back here for updates as we relay the responses.
