HAPPENING NOW
Pearl River flooding ends near Bogalusa
South Bossier BWA

Water news for Monday, April 8, 2024 1138 am CDT

Drinking Water Matters
Two hundred and fifty to three hundred households supplied by the South Bossier Water System remain under BWA until tomorrow following a service outage for tank cleaning.

Flood Tracker provisional data from USGS streamflow monitors
Forty-seven streamflow gauges record flooding in the USA Monday, down from sixty-eight yesterday. WT tracks the nation's most common natural disaster dynamics through New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana. As of this report we are watching 7 monitors indicating active flooding; 1 in Georgia, 2 in Louisiana and 4 in Ohio.

In Louisiana Region 1 northwest, Bayou Bodcau continues to relax, just three feet over flood stage near Shreveport on a slow and steady decline back to its basin. Region 7 watershed and the east border Pearl River flooding subsided Sunday mid-afternoon near Bogalusa. Pearl River is still overflowing downstream in St Tammany Parish at the Town of Pearl River. Flow at Pearl River is eight inches above flood stage on a steady declining trend. Three sites are recording low flow levels through Louisiana Monday, see the map for details.

Current streamflow map for Ohio is down to four sites indicating provisional flows above flood stage. As of midnight last night, Ohio River is no longer flooding at Portsmouth. Flooding ended at Point Pleasant Sunday late afternoon, was back in the channel at Ashland KY Sunday at 515 am. Wills Creek, St. Josephs and Scioto Rivers are no longer flooding. Scioto River tributaries Alum Creek and Olentangy River continue to run high in the upper basin. Flooding continues in the Muskingum watershed. Muskingum River is flooding near Coshocton, tributary Killbuck Creek is still recording flow above flood stage at Killbuck. Stillwater Creek is flooding at Uhrichsville. Tiffin River is still inches over flood stage at Stryker in the Lake Erie west basin. This overflow looks to be ending today, more to follow.

Georgia, Day 33: Satilla River is still recording a foot over flood stage at Atkinson on a steady declining trend. Tallapoosa River watershed has escalated to moderate drought rating with adjacent area of the Coosa and Tennessee River watersheds rated below normal.

New York State: Hudson River is no longer flooding near Piermont. Swan River monitor is still indicating above 99th percentile at East Patchogue on Long Island with a coastal flood statement in effect for this evening.

See black tags on the map for active flood, blue for high flow, 99th percentile or more.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
