Aftermath of Tropical Depression Debby: Flooding continues in Georgia, New York and Eastern Canada

By Saturday morning, August 10, 2024 eighteen streamflow gauges of the USGS reference network were still recording flooding in south Georgia days after Tropical Storm Debby slammed into the east coast of Florida. Now tagged Tropical Depression Debby and growing more hostile, Debby Downer smacked New York with flash flooding yesterday afternoon, a State of Emergency declared by the Governors of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. By Saturday noon, three reference sites in the USGS streamflow network of New York Water Science Center were still recording active flooding, most monitoring stations recording water levels in decline as the storm has largely pushed off into Canada, causing extensive flooding in the eastern Provinces.

Water facilities are challenged to control microbiological and other contamination during flood events. Those with private wells should seek guidance from local health adminstration on how to sanitize a well that has been flooded. Georgia Coastal Health has offered this advice and steps to disinfect a private well here.
Watch for local drinking water advisories and be prepared to flush out your lines, allowing the water to run for several minutes to clear stagnant water after the potable water service is restored. Yellow tags on our maps indicated boil water advisories.

According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) year-to-date tally to the end of July 2024, Debby is one of three weather and climate disasters tracking to become a billion dollar disaster once all the damages are assessed. NOAA tracks the trends, averaging the number of billion dollar and higher disasters from 1980 to 2023. Over that 43 year period, average annual billion dollar weather disasters: 8.5. Over the most recent five years, 2019-2023 the average has shot up to 20.4. Partway into the eighth month of 2024, 19 disasters are confirmed above one billion with three pending the classification, including Debby.

Follow us for streamflow tracking and impacts to drinking water supplies and quality. Drinking water advisories are located on the map in yellow, active flood events with black tags.
