West border Sabine River channel takes on a drought rating
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS streamflow gauges in Louisiana
Clear and sunny in New Orleans with a slight chance of thunderstorms tonight, no hazardous weather alerts at this hour from the National Weather Service. Streamflows are an even mix of normal and below seasonal normal ratings today with three stations in the network recording water levels below the 10th percentile. The drought map is filling in statewide, Region 1 the northwest tip of Bossier Parish has a below normal rating, Region 3 watershed is almost entirely rated below normal with the exception of the severe drought in the Bayou Macon, Tensas River channel, the area of East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes east of that river channel are clear of a drought rating, normal moisture level. Region 4 has taken on a below normal rating down the west border Sabine River impacting south Sabine, west Vernon, Beauregard and Calcasieu Parishes. Region 5 retains a moderate drought rating in Evangeline and Acadia Parishes, while all of Region 7 watershed is rated below normal, sparing the east half of St Helena and Livingston Parishes, and all of Washington and St Tammany Parishes, unrated. No flooding or high flows, no extreme low flows recorded as of this report.
WT HAB Tracker from the satellite monitoring program of National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
The latest image of Lake Pontchartrain and the southeast water bodies is dated Oct 2, a clear image of the southeast Louisiana water bodies captured at a high surface wind speed 12.4 mph. The widespread HAB spotted in the middle of Lake Pontchartrain Sep 30 is no longer visible, this could be due to the wind speed above 4mph submerging the bloom out of view. Lac des Allemands and Bayou Fortier appear clear today, Lakes Cataouache and Salvador likewise. Lakes Verret and Palourde widespread HABs are lower in concentration than our last view, down around the 600 to 700 thousand cells per ml range. A previous image Sep 29 showed Lake Verret widespread HAB in the south of the water body at high concentration 800 thousand to 1 million cells per ml. Lake Palourde widespread HABs had at that time settled into the north half of the water body matching concentration color scale for 800 thousand cells per ml. Black Bay widespread HAB is visible in the new image Oct 2, a bit lower concentration, 800 thousand cells per ml. See the latest satellite image of southeast LA water bodies, here.
