NWS: URGENT - FIRE WEATHER MESSAGE

Urgent Fire Weather Message issued 413 am October 16 by NWS New Orleans

RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING FOR CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND SOUTHERN AND COASTAL MISSISSIPPI

A red flag warning has been issued for today due to a combination of low relative humidity and winds of 15 mph with higher gusts.

Very low humidities and gusty northeast winds atop dry grounds will promote an elevated fire danger across the region Wednesday, which will promote the ignition and spread of any wildfires that develop. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, even away from areas where burn bans are not in effect. Mild days, cool nights, and dry conditions will continue across the region each day through Monday.

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS streamflow gauges in Louisiana
Streamflows tilt lower midweek, the most common rating below normal, in the bottom 25th percentile of historic water levels for this date. The drought map remains as reported yesterday, Region 3 extreme drought persists along Bayou Macon-Tensas River with severe drought impacting East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes right up to the Mississippi River. West Carroll, Richland and Franklin Parishes remain unrated, the rest of Region 3 surface area is rated below normal. Region 5 watershed has filled in with below normal rated area, from Evangeline and Acadia Parishes now extended east. Region 7 watershed is filled in entirely below normal right up to Tangipahoa Parish, still in moderate drought, St Tammany and Washington are still unrated.

No flooding or high flows, no extreme low flows to the 1st percentile are recorded as of this report.

WT HAB Tracker from the satellite monitoring program of National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
The latest image of Lake Pontchartrain and the southeast water bodies is dated Oct 15, a mostly clear image captured at wind speed of 3.5 mph. Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas are partially cloud obscured again as the prior image Oct 14, no HAB visible in cloud breaks. A prior image October 12 shows open water HABs dispersed throughout Lake Maurepas. In the Oct 15 image, Lac des Allemands and Bayou Fortier are partially cloud obscured. Bayou Fortier appears with lakewide HAB after a period with no visible bluegreen activity at all, the concentration looks to be a match for 500 thousand cells per ml. Lac des Allemands has widespread HAB in the midlake water around that 500 thousand cells per ml. Lakes Cataouache and Salvador are partially cloud obscured with no HAB activity visible in the cloud breaks. Lakes Verret and Palourde HABs remain lakewide at the high concentration 700 to 800 thousand cells per ml. Lake Lery lakewide HAB 700 thousand cells per ml, Black Bay widespread HAB 700 thousand cells per ml. See the latest satellite image of southeast LA water bodies, here.

Register Now for the 2024 National Pollution Prevention Training and Conference

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be holding its 2024 National Pollution Prevention Training and Conference in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 10-11. The event will convene representatives from EPA grantees, academia, industry, non-governmental organizations, and state and federal agencies. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of pollution prevention (P2), while leveraging and strengthening their connections to other practitioners. P2, which is also known as source reduction, is any practice that reduces, eliminates or prevents pollution at its source prior to recycling, treatment or disposal. Many of the practices and goals of P2 overlap significantly with those of sustainability and zero waste.

Sessions will include panel discussions and presentations by P2 experts that examine best practices and examples of how EPA’s P2 grants have delivered technical assistance to help businesses develop and adopt P2 practices. Participants will learn more about topics such as reducing pollution and finding alternatives, including for some chemicals EPA has regulated under the Toxic Substances Control Act. For example, participants will learn about efforts to find alternatives to methylene chloride and how businesses are preventing pollution by transitioning away from the use of perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene. In addition, sessions will discuss identifying sustainable food services and using products with safe ingredients in salons.

The event will be held at the Yotel in Washington, D.C., with virtual attendance options available. Events are free to attend but registration is required. If you are planning to attend the event in person, the deadline to register is Nov. 1. The deadline for virtual attendance is Dec. 2.
