Calcasieu River flooding near Glenmora
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in the rivers and bayous of Louisiana
Sunny and 60 degrees in New Orleans Friday afternoon, sunny and 58 in Shreveport, heading for a high of 68 today while the streamflow gauges record normal to much above normal flows. Calcasieu River continues to overflow the upper channel near Glenmora, running slightly higher today than yesterday. See the black tag on the map to the right for water level and flow volume details. The drought map is almost empty going into the weekend, a slim slice of Region 3 watershed running along the Bayou Macon-Tensas River channel is down to moderate drought from extreme drought short weeks ago. West Bossier Parish remains below normal another day. The remaining area of Louisiana is deemed to have at least the historic average moisture for this time of year. Aside from the one active flood event, there are no extreme high or low values showing up in the network today.
WT HAB Tracker from the HAB early detection satellite monitoring program run by National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
The latest image upload was captured Nov 21 at a very high wind speed, 19.7 mph. Wind over 4 mph can cause the normally buoyant HAB mats to become submerged and mixed down the water column, such that they are not visible by surface-level observation or satellite imaging. In spite of the high wind, we do see HABs in the smaller water bodies. Lakes Verret and Palourde show some HAB activity around the 300 thousand cells per ml, Lac des Allemands west bay is quite full of dispersed HAB clumps, also around 300 thousand cells per ml. Lake Salvador has dispersed HABs near the north shore, 300 thousand cells per ml.
