50 years of Safe Drinking Water Act
Safe Drinking Water Act
Fifty years ago this week, national legislation was passed to ensure a consistent quality of drinking water for the American people. The US Environmental Protection Agency has responsibility to manage and enforce the Safe Drinking Water Act, ensuring public safety and inspiring public confidence in the nation's municipal drinking water.
Louisiana Department of Health supports 1261 licensed drinking water facilities, working to ensure that the standards are maintained from source water testing through treatment and distribution right to the tap. With challenges posed by flood and drought, intermittent source water contamination from spills and cyanobacteria, even the chemistry of disinfection poses threat to drinking water. Water technicians and inspectors do their part to daily meet or exceed SDWA standards, alerting their customers with BWAs when necessary to maintain safety. All federal, state and local drinking water facility personnel are to be commended for their service.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Bossier Parish: Plain Dealing is under a BWA following an accidental electrical failure yesterday. During tank maintenance at the water plant, a wire was cut and immediately repaired. The loss of power and pressure requires a precautionary BWA until the water tests show the water has not been contaminated. Water testing is underway.
New Orleans: A precautionary BWA was issued Wednesday for customers along Lake Pontchartrain in Little Woods due to a water main break. Connections included in the BWA: Morrison Rd, from Poitevent Ave to Paris Rd, Paris, from Morrison to Hayne Blvd, Hayne, from Paris to 9600 Hayne, Poitevent, from Irby Street to Morrison.

WT HAB Tracker from the satellite surveillance program of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
The latest satellite image from NCCOS was captured Dec 19 at a surface wind speed 9 mph, completely cloud obscured showing none of the southeast water bodies we have been tracking. The previous image Dec 18 at .7 mph showed lakewide bluegreen algae bloom in Bayou Fortier. The bluegreen extends down into Lac des Allemands, filling the north half of the west bay and down to the southeast shore matching concentration color scale for 700 to 800 thousand cells per ml. Widespread bluegreen algae was also observed in Black Bay Dec 18, the concentration 300 thousand cells per ml.
