Rain and thunderstorms possible for the northwest

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Louisiana
In the northwest, Shreveport local forecast office is calling for 60% chance of showers with a thunderstorm possible after noon, the expected high around 68. Christmas Eve is more likely to present with showers and thunderstorm, 80% chance to have 1 to 2 inches of rain overnight, low 56. For Christmas Day, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms. It is fair, 60 degrees in New Orleans, becoming sunny with high around 70, no rain in the forecast.

Streamflows run a mix of levels across the eight watershed regions of Louisiana. Region 1 in the northwest is signalling normal to much below normal, in a range covering 3rd to 60th percentile in the streams and bayous of Caddo, Bossier and DeSoto Parishes. Region 2 runs seasonal normal, Region 3 runs the gamut from 1st percentile extreme low flow to a 63rd percentile seasonal normal reading. In the upper drainage basin of Region 3 near Lillie in Union Parish, Little Corney Bayou sets a record low for this date in 67 years of monitoring. In the southwest, Region 4 is mostly below normal again today, the lowest result today found on Sabine River near Bon Wier, TX. Only three Dec 24 readings in the last 62 years have been lower than this Christmas Eve measurement. Region 5 is mostly normal with one site recording a 2nd percentile flow, Bayou Teche at Keystone Lock and Dam near St Martinville. Only one other time in the last 65 years has the water level been so low on Dec 24. Regions 6 and 8 have just one rated station between them, this rating is seasonal normal. The other set-ups in Regions 6 and 8 nearest the Gulf Coast in the southeast have not been monitored long enough to establish a normal range. Region 7 runs 31st to 2nd percentile, the lowest flow is found on Tickfaw River at Liverpool.

Moderate drought is back in Region 3, again covering Claiborne, Union and Lincoln Parishes. Below normal ratings in Region 4 now extends beyond the Sabine River channel, covering all but the Calcasieu River channel. Region 5 Evangeline and Acadia Parishes continue below normal. Central Washington Parish continues in moderate drought in Region 7, Tangipahoa Parish is still rated below normal. Region 1 watershed Bossier Parish remmains below normal.

WT HAB Tracker from the satellite surveillance program of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
The latest satellite image from NCCOS was captured Dec 23 at a surface wind speed 7 mph, another clear image of Lake Pontchartrain and southeast water bodies. The HAB in Lac Des Allemands is showing again, the wind speed having calmed from over 15 mph to 7, the mat is back at the surface though we may not be seeing all of it. Lake Boeuf is showing a HAB for the first time in many weeks, the concentration of these blooms is around 400 thousand cells per ml. Black Bay bluegreen appears to have moved out toward open water in the Gulf, 200 thousand cells per ml.
