Northwest drought goes to severe level
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Louisiana
Prolonged low streamflows in the northwest have plunged parts of Region 3 watershed into severe drought, advancing the moderate drought that has been impacting Claiborne, Union and Lincoln Parishes for weeks. A driver of the deepening drought, a record Boxing Day low collected in Boeuf River near Girard, the lowest water level measured here since 1940. Below normal ratings continue in Region 3 East Carroll, Madison and Tensas Parishes, and Region 1 Bossier Parish. Region 4's Sabine River channel has bounced back, no longer in moderate drought, downgraded to below normal in step with the rest of Region 4. Region 5 Evangeline and Acadia Parishes continue below normal. Central Washington Parish has escalated into severe drought in while the Pearl River channel comes on the drought radar below normal in east Washington and east St Tammany Parishes. Tangipahoa Parish is still rated below normal.
New Orleans reports overcast conditions, 63 degrees. Fog expected today, high 70. Tonight, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 pm. Widespread fog is expected Friday morning ahead of showers and thunderstorms with fog before noon. Overcast, 61 degrees at Shreveport, with 60% chance of showers and possibly severe thunderstorms before midnight, up to three quarters of an inch possible.
WT HAB Tracker from the satellite surveillance program of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
The latest satellite image from NCCOS was captured Dec 25 at a surface wind speed 5 mph, a blocked image. The prior snapshot was picked up Dec 24, a clear image of Lake Pontchartrain and southeast water bodies revealing a widespread bluegreen algae mat in Bayou Fortier. A large localized HAB is observed in Lac des Allemands, a lakewide HAB in Lake Boeuf. All these mats match concentration scale at 400 thousand cells per ml.
