Kicking off 2025 with bluegreen blooms
WT HAB Tracker from the satellite surveillance program of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)
A bright clear image of southeast water bodies from NCCOS was captured yesterday, Dec 30 at a surface wind speed 2.4 mph, just what we need for a reliable assessment of bluegreen, aka cyanobacteria growth in the lakes. Clearly visible in this image, the widespread HAB in Bayou Fortier and Lac des Allemands, the concentration of the bloom matches the color scale at a higher level than seen earlier this month, 700 to 800 thousand cells per ml. Lake Boeuf clearly shows up with widespread HAB in the west, 500 to 600 thousand cells per ml concentration. THe HAB in Black Bay has pressed in toward the inner shorelines, widespread through a large area at 300 thousand cells per ml.
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in Louisiana
Streamflows remain much above seasonal statewide Monday, the rain over the weekend has filled the channels to brimming with two floods in the reference network, active since Saturday.
Flooding continues in Webster Parish, watershed Region 1. Bayou Dorcheat has gained two inches of depth overnight, still flooding near Springhill, that level now a foot and two inches over flood stage, on a slow steady rising trend. Calcasieu River continues to flood in Region 4 watershed near Glenmora, this flood is coming down, from two feet over the channel at our last report, now a foot and seven inches over.
Higher water levels have the drought nearly wiped from the state of Louisiana Tuesday. We welcome the New Year with one last spot rated, the Pearl River channel running down through east Washington and St. Tammany Parishes has shifted from moderate drought to below normal overnight. No other part of LA is presenting with drought of any degree.
Partly cloudy, 72 degrees at New Orleans Tuesday. Fair and 55 at Shreveport, expected high 61, no rain in the forecast for New Year's Eve.
