NWS New Orleans: Up to 8 inches of snow possible today, travel not advised

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CST
TONIGHT
Moderate to heavy snow expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 3 and 7 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze in portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult.
The hazardous conditions will impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
Persons are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to
reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a hat will keep you from losing your body heat.
Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use
extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

COLD WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO
6 PM CST TUESDAY......EXTREME COLD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH
WEDNESDAY MORNING
For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 14 expected. For the Extreme Cold Watch, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 10 above possible for portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
For the Cold Weather Advisory, from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM CST Tuesday. For the Extreme Cold Watch, from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.
IMPACTS...Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.
To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Drain in-ground sprinkler systems and cover above ground pipes.
Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and
unfrozen water.
Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure
portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills
inside.
Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a
hat, and gloves.

Streamflow Situation from the network of monitoring stations of the US Geological Survey in Louisiana
Streamflows have dropped again overnight, there are nowthree monitoring stations in Region 3 and one in Region 7 recording extreme low water levels, first percentile. Just one flood event remains, the Sabine River continues to flood in Calcasieu Parish, seven inches over the channel. Calcasieu River stopped flooding last night around 930 pm, back in the channel near Glenmora in Region 4.
Freezing fog and windy in New Orleans, 29 degrees and not getting any warmer today. Winter storm warning in effect today, snow will be heavy at times, the north wind gusts as high as 30 mph, driving wind chill values as low as 15 F. Total daytime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is possible. Shreveport is 30 degrees, high today above freezin, 36 degrees.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Orleans Parish: New Orleans East and Lower Ninth Ward water pressure was impacted by a pump malfunction at the Carrollton plant. The loss of pressure in the distribution system, falling below the minimum 20 psi generates an automatic precautionary boil water advisory. The BWA applies to all of the Lower Ninth Ward customers and specific areas in New Orleans East. More to follow.
St. Landry Parish: A contractor punctured a water line in Opelousas yesterday. The damage caused a drop in the water pressure supplying Opelousas General Health System South Campus and Clos du Bois subdivision. The impacted connections are under a precautionary boil water order until further notice. More to follow.
Plaquemines Parish: Belle Chasse is under a BWA after a car damaged a fire hydrant and a utility pole near Belle Chasse High School Sunday. Belle Chasse Water District serves 19644 residents plus local businesses from a surface water source in watershed Region 8.
Richland Parish: East Richland Water System issued a BWA following a water main break on Friday. The BWA applies to all customers connecting on Boone Road, Rhodes Road, Foster Road, Jones Lane, and customers from 57-50 McHand Drive, 710-831 Collins Drive, 533-916 Highway 854. East Richland WW District serves 2835 residents plus local business connections from a groundwater well source, purchased from another licensed water treatment facility in watershed Region 3.
St. Landry Parish: The Town of Grand Coteau Water System issued a BWA Friday after a major waterline break which caused road closures and school shutdowns. Grand Coteau serves drinking water to 1650 residents from a groundwater source in watershed Region 5. More to follow.
The new EPA quarterly compliance report is out, including the new Serious Violator list. Louisiana has 124 Serious Violator drinking water facilities out of total 1263 active facilities with SDWA permits as of the last audited quarter, ended Sep 30, 2024.
