US EPA updates Safe Drinking Water Act compliance stats, the WTLA.us Serious Violator List is here

EPA has released the latest quarterly reporting audit of US drinking water facilities compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Louisiana drinking water facilities lost a bit of ground in the current quarter, the second consecutive period with an increase in the number of residents served by serious violator facilities. As of the stats released this month, 437,779 residents, 9.5% of Louisiana's population, have their drinking water provided by facilities with significant violations of the SDWA. Serious violations include exceeding maximum contaminant levels for any number of harmful substances regulated in US drinking water.

The EPA is currently being challenged through the courts on the addition of six "forever chemicals" (Per- and polyfluoroalkyn substances) determined present in the drinking water of approximately 150 million US citizens.
Refer to a prior article on PFAS, here.

Of 1263 licensed drinking water facilities in Louisiana, the number with a perfect operational record has dropped slightly, from 65.4% to 62.6% as of the latest audit. The Louisiana Serious Violator List has gone from 110 to 124 facilities as of the latest information available. WTLA.us congratulates 17 facilities considered Enforcement Priorities in the last quarter that have amended significant violations and been cleared from this list of drinking water notoriety.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Catahoula Parish: Town of Jonesville Water System issued a BWA for some ratepayers following a water main break Monday. Customers on Tulip and Monrovia Street came under the boil notice until lab testing confirms the water free of contamination. Town of Jonesville supplies potable water to 2811 residential customers from a groundwater well source in Region 3 watershed.

Orleans Parish: Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) reports that the BWA for East Bank has been cancelled for most addresses. As of 5 pm Monday Jan 27, "SWBNO, in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), has canceled the precautionary boil water advisory as bacteriological tests confirmed that water in the area was safe to drink and could be used for personal needs. The advisory was in effect for the East Bank of New Orleans.

While testing has passed for the majority of the East Bank of New Orleans, some areas remain under boil water advisory and testing is underway. The limited parts of New Orleans East still under boil water advisory includes:
  • Old Gentilly Rd from Jourdan Rd to Elaine St, Elaine St to Intracoastal Waterway, Intracoastal Waterway to Jourdan Rd
  • Hayne Blvd from Lucerne St to Wave Dr, Wave Dr to Morrison Ave, Morrison Ave from Wave Dr to Lucerne St, Lucerne St to Hayne Blvd

A map of the impacted area can be found, here.
